ESMO 2018: Women for oncology -“We are stuck”

There is a clear gender gap in oncology, with female oncologists under-represented in leadership roles in national and international oncology societies as well as in clinical teams caring for patients.

“We are stuck” said Prof. Dr. Solange Peters, Chair of the ESMO Women for Oncology Committee, ESMO 2018 Scientific Chair and President Elect of ESMO. Through the W4O initiative, ESMO wants to maintain a strong commitment to monitoring and raising awareness about the gender imbalance in leadership positions in oncology. The findings are particularly disappointing in view of the fact that at least a third of oncologists are women.

PD Dr. Anne Letsch, Charité Berlin, is a member of the DGHO Women’s working group, a German initiative working on bridging the gender gap. Their research showed, for instance, that especially industry sponsored events tend to prefer male boards and speakers.
